PAPA Lectures at CUA: "Ontological Transformation of Sacred Space through the Mosaic Surface"
09th March 2009
On March 9th, 2009, Michael Patrick of Patrick and Anderson Partners in Architecture delivered a lecture on "The Ontological Transformation of Sacred Space through the Mosaic Surface." Drawing heavily on photographs of Byzantine Apse Mosaics taken during his extensive travels to the churches of Rome, Mr. Patrick argued that the Christian Narrative comes alive in spaces that are radically transformed by the unique kind of surface that mosaics create.
The lecture was given to coincide with the Competition for the decorative program of the Great Dome at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, near the Catholic University of America, the location of the lecture. This competition addresses the last remaining undecorated dome of the Basilica.
