Agrarian Addition

This 300 sq ft addition maximizes the benefits of additional space for a family of four. Cost-effective material selections & thoughtful detailing that reflect the rural architectural character of the Eastern Shore give this small addition significant presence for a very reasonable budget (<$100/s.f.). The metal roof not only reflects unwanted heat gain, but it also recalls agrarian structures nearby, as does the extended ridge that allows the use of block & tackle to bring items to the 'hay loft' (read 'attic') for much needed additional storage. Two by six walls allow for thicker thermal insulation while accommodating a ten foot ceiling that makes the small addition seem much grander on the interior than its modest footprint would suggest. Reclaimed pine wood flooring, a salvaged oval window, Greenguard certified insulation, low VOC paints and other green materials were used throughout. Construction waste was so minimal that there was never even the need for a dumpster. What couldn't find by picked-up with local trash service or recycling was given to Habitat for Humanity for reuse.
